A Texas judge has ordered former Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson to surrender personal assets to help cover a debt that has grown to over $12 million.
This comes after a court-appointed receiver has been working to recover funds from Peterson following a lawsuit over a $5.2 million loan he failed to repay to a Pennsylvania lending company. Due to accumulated interest and fees, the debt has more than doubled.
Receiver Robert Berleth requested in July that constables accompany him to Peterson’s home in Missouri City, a suburb of Houston, to catalog assets that can be sold to settle the debt.
In a court filing, Berleth stated, “The receiver requests constable accompaniment when levying the numerous assets known to be stored at the residence to maintain peace and prevent interference with the receiver’s duties.” A judge approved this request on Monday.
Peterson’s attorneys have not yet responded to requests for comment. In February, they filed documents seeking to stop Berleth from auctioning various items seized from storage, including Peterson’s 2007 NFL “Rookie of the Year” trophy. A judge later halted the sale of these items.
Peterson, a seven-time Pro Bowler during his 10-year career with the Vikings, was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player in 2012. After leaving Minnesota, he played for six other teams, including Arizona, New Orleans, Washington, and Detroit.
