Just In: Mike Tomlin Provides Important Update on Russell Wilson’s Injury

Russell Wilson won’t get his chance for revenge against his former team when the Pittsburgh Steelers face the Denver Broncos on September 15. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced that they will start Justin Fields at quarterback due to his impressive showing in their season-opening victory over the Atlanta Falcons. The 35-year-old Wilson is still recovering from a calf injury, which caused him to miss the Falcons game.

When asked about Wilson’s recovery, Tomlin offered a cautiously optimistic update. “I just spoke with (Wilson),” Tomlin said, as reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. “He’s feeling better today than he did over the weekend. What that means going forward, I’m not sure yet. We’ll evaluate his participation, starting with the level and quality of his involvement in practice.”

Russell Wilson, a former MVP and Super Bowl champion, signed a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers during the offseason for the veteran’s minimum salary of $1.2 million. In August 2024, head coach Mike Tomlin named Wilson the starting quarterback over 25-year-old Justin Fields.

Wilson had two lackluster seasons with the Denver Broncos before being released in March 2024, despite signing a five-year, $242 million extension in 2022. Fields, who was traded to the Steelers from the Chicago Bears during the offseason, impressed in the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons, completing 17 of 23 passes for 156 yards and rushing for an additional 57 yards.
