The Minnesota Vikings delivered a strong performance in their season opener against the New York Giants, but their Week 2 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers presents a new challenge.
Quarterback Sam Darnold acknowledged this during a media session on Wednesday, September 11. He also shared a key advantage he holds after spending the 2023 season as Brock Purdy’s backup in San Francisco. “It was huge to learn how they operate — not just in terms of strategy, but as an organization. It was great to be part of that for a year,” Darnold explained. “Seeing their defense every day definitely helps … but I’m sure they’ll have some new wrinkles this season.”

In addition to his inside knowledge of the 49ers’ coaching strategies and players’ strengths, Sam Darnold emphasized how being part of a winning team for the first time in his NFL career significantly helped his growth as a player. “I learned so much last year. Every week, going through the game plan and studying really helped me grow,” Darnold said. “I discovered a lot about myself and about football.”
Darnold had a standout performance in Week 1, completing 19-of-24 passes for 208 yards and 2 touchdowns in a commanding 28-6 victory. While he did throw an interception, it came as a result of being hit by a defender during the pass, causing the ball to go off course.
Last season, Darnold appeared in 10 games for the 49ers, including one start, recording 297 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. The 49ers advanced to the Super Bowl, where they ultimately lost in overtime to the Kansas City Chiefs.
