The New York Mets are set to promote infielder Luisangel Acuña, younger brother of Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr., to the majors for his debut, as reported by Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extra Base. Mike Puma of the New York Post notes that the decision was already in motion prior to shortstop Francisco Lindor leaving Friday’s game with back soreness.
Acuña, 22, was acquired from the Texas Rangers at the 2023 trade deadline in exchange for pitcher Max Scherzer. Initially seen as a promising middle-infield prospect, Acuña’s performance has fallen short since joining the Mets, batting .258/.299/.355 this season at Triple-A, with a high strikeout-to-walk ratio.
The Mets hope Acuña can contribute as a utility player. This season, he played at least 30 games at shortstop, second base, and center field. Known for his speed and base-stealing ability, Acuña has stolen 40 bases on 54 attempts this season, maintaining an 80% success rate throughout his minor-league career.
The Mets also recently acquired infielder Eddy Alvarez from the Boston Red Sox after losing Jeff McNeil to a season-ending wrist injury. Acuña is expected to bring a more versatile skillset, providing an upgrade for the team’s playoff push.
Entering Saturday, the Mets hold an 81-66 record, clinging to the National League’s third and final wild-card spot with a one-game lead over the Atlanta Braves. The two teams are set for a crucial series from Sept. 24-26, which could decide the wild-card race and mark the first time both Acuña brothers will appear at the same MLB game, though Ronald will not be playing.
