Healthy At The Right Time: Oklahoma football getting major weapon back for Tennessee clash

One of the top matchups in Week 4 of the college football season features No. 15 Oklahoma facing No. 6 Tennessee in a crucial SEC showdown. Despite a string of injuries, the Sooners have fought their way to a 3-0 record heading into this marquee game.

Fortunately for Oklahoma, they appear to be getting healthier at the right time. According to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, wide receiver Nic Anderson, the team’s top returning receiver, is expected to make his first start of the season.

Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Jackson Arnold (11) celebrates with offensive lineman Febechi Nwaiwu (54) after a touchdown during a college football game between the University of Oklahoma Sooners (OU) and the Tulane Green Wave at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Okla., Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024.

“Oklahoma’s injured wide receiver group should be much closer to full strength when they take on Tennessee this weekend,” Zenitz posted on X (formerly Twitter). “Nic Anderson, who had 10 touchdown receptions last year, is set to make his season debut and is listed as probable. Andrel Anthony is also probable.”

In 2023, Anderson’s 10 touchdowns were tied for the team lead with Drake Stoops, who has since graduated. Anderson hauled in 38 receptions for 798 yards across 13 games last season.

Anderson might not be the only significant player making a return this weekend. Wide receiver Andrel Anthony, interior offensive lineman Troy Everett, and safety Kendall Dolby are all listed as probable, as reported by George Stoia III of SoonerScoop.com on X.

Oklahoma has a chance to get on playoff track with win vs. Tennessee

Oklahoma football has been somewhat overlooked through the first three weeks of the season, largely due to a couple of underwhelming victories. In Week 2, the Sooners narrowly edged out Houston 16-12 in Norman, and in Week 3, they pulled away late to secure a 34-19 win against Tulane. The lack of dominant performances has kept Oklahoma from climbing higher in the AP poll, despite their undefeated record.
