Atlanta, dealing with three players sidelined by fractures – including Ozzie Albies’ fractured wrist and Austin Riley’s current absence – may be limited to using Whit Merrifield at third base, as his foot fracture could prevent him from playing in the outfield.
This could potentially push Riley’s replacement, Gio Urshela, to the bench, although Urshela has significant MLB experience as a shortstop.
According to the AJC’s Justin Tuscano, Braves manager Brian Snitker is still evaluating Merrifield’s role but has not confirmed whether he will play third base.
I asked Brian Snitker about Whit Merrifield's role when Ozzie Albies returns. Snit said he's still trying to figure all of that out. It sounds like Merrifield will still have some sort of role, as Snit said the at-bats have been good and his speed is impactful.
