The Pittsburgh Steelers have started the season strong at 3-0 despite facing several injuries. Russell Wilson was named the starting quarterback but is now sidelined due to a calf injury, allowing Justin Fields to step in effectively, raising questions about who will lead once Wilson is healthy. Additionally, linebacker Alex Highsmith and running backs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren are also injured.
The most critical setback is starting right tackle Troy Fautanu, who dislocated his kneecap and underwent surgery, leading to his placement on injured reserve for the season. In response, the Steelers signed offensive tackle Calvin Anderson, a six-year pro recently released by the Patriots. Fautanu was the 20th overall pick in the 2024 draft, while fellow first-rounder Broderick Jones, picked 14th in 2023, started in his place against the Chargers.
Steelers add depth to offensive line with veteran OT Calvin Anderson
Fautanu initially injured his knee in an August preseason game, which the Steelers deemed minor at the time. He missed the rest of the preseason and Week 1 but returned in Week 2 against the Broncos, only to dislocate his kneecap before Week 3. Under Fields’ leadership, the Steelers have focused on a strong ground game and defense, though Fields hasn’t yet surpassed 250 passing yards or thrown multiple touchdowns in a game.
Despite this, Bill Belichick praises their quarterback situation. The Steelers aim to bolster their offensive line for better protection and run support. Currently, Harris is nursing a right-arm injury, and Warren needed an MRI on his knee. If they can’t play, Cordarrelle Patterson may step in during Week 4 against the Colts.
