Shocking Setback: Michigan State Loses Out on Game-Changing 5-Star Sensation

On Wednesday night, all attention was focused on Indiana as five-star small forward Jalen Haralson prepared to choose between Indiana, Notre Dame, and Michigan State.

The La Lumiere standout had numerous schools vying for his commitment, but he recently narrowed his options to a top three: Michigan State, Indiana, and Notre Dame. Heading into his decision, many expected Haralson to stay local and play for either the Hoosiers or the Irish.

In the end, that’s exactly what he did.

Despite Michigan State’s strong efforts, particularly following his visit on the weekend of Sept. 14, it wasn’t enough to sway Haralson from staying in his home state.

La Lumiere junior Jalen Haralson (32) defends teammate Ace Bucker during an open practice Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023, at the La Porte Civic Auditorium.

This is a tough blow for Tom Izzo, as Haralson seemed to be a perfect fit for the Spartans’ system. A physically gifted wing with ball-handling skills, three-level scoring ability, and impressive athleticism, he would have been an excellent cornerstone for Michigan State’s 2025 recruiting class.

Currently, the Spartans have no commitments for 2025, but they remain in the running for other top prospects. This week, Darius Adams and Dwayne Aristode both included Michigan State in their top school lists, signaling decisions are likely on the horizon.

However, this is the second setback for Izzo’s squad this week, as four-star big man Trent Sisley also committed to Indiana.

With time and plenty of remaining targets, there’s still potential for Michigan State to build a strong 2025 class.
