The Chicago Bears’ underwhelming 1-2 start has left fans puzzled, particularly regarding the minimal use of star receiver DJ Moore.
Despite signing a lucrative four-year, $110 million contract, Moore’s output has been disappointing, with only 19 receptions and an average of 55 yards per game through the first three weeks. Inconsistent quarterback play and a disjointed offensive scheme seem to be hindering his performance.
ESPN analyst Tom Waddle didn’t hold back in criticizing the Bears for failing to maximize Moore’s potential. On ESPN 1000, Waddle highlighted the issue, stating, “Moore ranks 72nd out of 95 wide receivers in average depth of target. While bubble screens and quick outs are fine, they need to start utilizing their top receiver more effectively downfield.”

With the recent addition of Caleb Williams to the roster, the pressure on the Bears’ coaching staff to fully utilize their offensive weapons—especially DJ Moore—has intensified. As the season progresses, there’s a growing concern about continued underperformance.
To truly unlock Moore’s potential, the Bears need to take a more creative approach. His standout 2023 season, where he recorded 96 catches, 1,364 yards, and 8 touchdowns, demonstrates that increasing his target share could significantly impact the team’s success. This would involve designing plays specifically for Moore and shifting him around the formation to exploit defensive mismatches.
By tapping into the skills that earned Moore his massive contract, the Bears could find the spark needed to turn their season around.
