Latest Report: New York Yankees and Mets are in an intense battle for a star free agent, but it’s not Juan Soto

The New York Yankees and New York Mets have been rumored to be in a free-agent race for Juan Soto this winter. However, a recent report indicates they may actually be competing for another player, and it’s not Corbin Burnes.

As the MLB season heads toward its conclusion, both the Yankees and Mets are vying for playoff spots. Both teams have performed well in the second half of the season, fueling hopes for a possible Subway World Series rematch in October.

Regardless of how their 2024 seasons end, both teams are expected to be major contenders in the free-agent market. Juan Soto, a star outfielder, and Corbin Burnes, a top-tier pitcher, are considered the best available players, with the Yankees and Mets reportedly interested in pursuing one or both.

MLB insider suggests New York Yankees and Mets could be serious contenders for Alex Bregman

“Either New York team could sign Alex Bregman, I really think so,” Jon Heyman remarked on Thursday. “Imagine Bregman as the Yankees’ third baseman—why not? Jazz Chisholm could move from third to second, where he excelled as a second baseman. I don’t see them re-signing Gleyber Torres, no matter how much Aaron Boone likes him.

“And why not the Mets? They’ll try to re-sign Pete Alonso, but if they succeed, they still have third base options. Bregman could fit with the Mets if they believe Mark Vientos can handle first base. Bregman would fit in a lot of places.”

Third and first base were problem areas for the Yankees until they acquired Chisholm before the trade deadline. Meanwhile, the Mets hope to retain slugger Pete Alonso, but there’s a chance he could leave after this season. Bregman would provide both teams with a powerful bat and solid defense at third base.

Heyman also mentioned that while Bregman’s current team, the Astros, would like to keep him, he might seek a contract beyond what they’re willing to offer.
