Breaking: Minnesota top basketball recruit commits to Clemson over Iowa

Alexandria senior Chase Thompson, one of Minnesota’s top two-sport athletes, announced his commitment to play college basketball at Clemson on Sunday. The 6-foot-8, 215-pound forward chose Clemson over Iowa after taking official visits to both schools this month. His visit to Clemson last weekend solidified his decision.

“As I was leaving Clemson, I thought, ‘I have to come back,’” Thompson told the Star Tribune. “I took a few days to reflect and let the excitement settle, but I knew Clemson was the right choice.”

Thompson, who attended a Clemson football game against North Carolina State, was impressed by the atmosphere and expects the basketball team to draw similar crowds, noting the sold-out student section for basketball season. He also highlighted Clemson’s academic offerings as a key factor in his decision.

The younger brother of former Gophers player Treyton Thompson, Chase is ranked as a four-star prospect and 94th in the nation for the Class of 2025 by Rivals.com. 247Sports.com ranks him as a three-star prospect and the second-best senior in Minnesota.

Last season, Thompson led Alexandria to a fourth-place finish in the Class 3A state tournament, averaging 19.4 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. As Alexandria’s senior quarterback, he has thrown for 1,285 yards and 16 touchdowns with no interceptions, helping the Cardinals to a 5-0 record this season.

Thompson also mentioned meeting Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney, who gave him a tour of the facilities and joked about his football skills after watching his film.
