Latest News: Vikings Star Player opens up on relationships with Brock Purdy and his potential new rookie replacement

Sam Darnold’s fourth NFL chapter is shaping up to be a comeback.

Upon arriving in Minnesota, Darnold recognized that his role would differ significantly from his time with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers. He also knew that it would contrast with his single season at the San Francisco 49ers, where he served as backup to starting quarterback Brock Purdy throughout 2023.

Now, with the Minnesota Vikings, Darnold has seized the opportunity after an injury to J.J. McCarthy, the No. 10 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, provided him a chance to prove his talent once more.

In his debut for the Vikings, Darnold returned to MetLife Stadium, passing for 208 yards and two touchdowns with an impressive 79.2% completion rate, leading to a 28-6 victory over the New York Giants. He followed that performance with 268 yards and two touchdowns against his former team, the 49ers.

Through four games, Darnold has excelled, throwing four touchdowns in a win over the Houston Texans and three more against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. Only the Vikings and Kansas City Chiefs have a 4-0 record, and Darnold reflects on his growth since being drafted third overall in 2018, emphasizing how experience has helped him evolve both as a player and a person.

Darnold remains focused on mentoring McCarthy

Sam Darnold has led the Minnesota Vikings to a 4-0 record to open the 2024 NFL season

“In any field, whether it’s football – or more specifically, American football – or any job where you start young, you improve and learn from your experiences,” Darnold explained in an exclusive interview with Mirror U.S. “It’s the same in our profession. I feel like every year I’ve continued to grow and develop as a player, and this season is no different.”

Despite Minnesota’s impressive undefeated start, Darnold is mindful of the expectations on him. Even after McCarthy’s injury, he remains committed to guiding the rookie, who is seen as the team’s “future.”

“We have a great relationship,” he said about the rookie. “We spent a lot of time together during OTAs and training camp, and I tried to help him with the offense. Obviously, it’s tough seeing him get injured, but I’m here for him whenever he needs me. He’s also been really proactive in helping me out.”
