BREAKING: Tampa Bay Rays Officially Confirm Blockbuster Trade Deal With MLB Top Contenders

The Rays have officially acquired right-hander Ty Cummings from the Mariners as the player to be named later in the July trade that sent outfielder Randy Arozarena to Seattle, as confirmed by both teams. Cummings was not on Seattle’s 40-man roster, so he won’t need to be added to Tampa’s.

Rays' Randy Arozarena reaches 20-20 mark for a third straight season

The Mariners were leading the American League West for much of the first half of 2024, but struggled offensively in the summer. To bolster their lineup, they traded for Justin Turner from the Blue Jays and Arozarena from the Rays at the deadline. In the deal with Tampa, Seattle gave up prospects Aidan Smith, Brody Hopkins, and the player now identified as Cummings.

Although both Turner and Arozarena performed well for the Mariners, the team ultimately missed the postseason. However, they can still benefit from the Arozarena trade in the future, as he can be retained for two more seasons. After earning $8.1 million in 2024, he is projected to receive raises, with a projected salary of $11.7 million in 2025.

Cummings, who turns 23 next month, was drafted by the Mariners in the seventh round of the 2023 draft after playing at Campbell University in North Carolina, signing for a $225,000 bonus. He made his professional debut this year, starting 25 games for High-A Everett, where he posted a 4.17 ERA over 116.2 innings. He struck out 24.7% of batters, walked 9.2%, and had a ground-ball rate of 50.3%.

In July, Eric Longenhagen from FanGraphs released a list of the top 34 prospects in the Mariners’ system; Cummings wasn’t on that list but received an honorable mention as a potential depth starter.
