23-Year-Old Star Delivers Bold Message to Auburn Fans and Coach Hugh Freeze

Eugene Asante didn’t hold back about Auburn football’s ongoing struggles, but he also refrained from blaming his head coach, Hugh Freeze. Instead, he emphasized that the responsibility lies with himself and his teammates.

“I know the results are disappointing for the fans, but I trust in this team’s leadership and Coach Freeze’s vision,” Asante stated (h/t AL.com). “With someone like him leading us, I believe good things can happen. It’s essential for us as players to own up to our mistakes.”

Asante feels that the bye week was well-timed, urging fans to remain hopeful for a shift in momentum.

“I think the bye week helped us refocus on what we need to do and reminded us of our goals for the season,” he said. “We started with specific objectives, and now it’s about adjusting those goals and finishing strong.”

Why Eugene Asante and Griffin Speaks are two names Auburn fans need to know

He added, “Once we get that first win, it can really ignite the momentum we need. Confidence comes from winning and performing well on tape. If we can secure a victory, it could spark the energy this team desperately needs right now.”

Eugene Asante never buried Auburn football’s head coach, even when it was Bryan Harsin

Asante was recruited by Bryan Harsin during his second recruiting cycle, and to his credit, the Ghana-born linebacker never took cheap shots at the unpopular former head coach who brought him to Auburn.

After redshirting in 2022, Asante has emerged as a key player in 2023 under Hugh Freeze. While he could have criticized Harsin for keeping him on the bench after shining at UNC in 2020 and 2021, he chose not to.

That kind of maturity and leadership is what makes Asante a standout for the Tigers. He embodies the spirit of an Auburn man.

It’s easy to join the chorus of criticism against figures like Freeze and Harsin, but Asante refuses to stoop to that level.
