The New York Yankees have struggled with baserunning throughout the 2024 postseason. In Game 2 of the ALCS against the Cleveland Guardians, both Anthony Rizzo and Jazz Chisholm made costly mistakes on the base paths, resulting in outs.
In Game 3 on Thursday, it was Jose Trevino who committed a critical baserunning error. After driving in the first run with an RBI single, Trevino took a lead off first base, only to be caught by Guardians pitcher Matthew Boyd’s pickoff move. Trevino was quickly sent back to the dugout after a rundown between first and second.

Yankees radio announcer John Sterling was clearly frustrated by the error, saying, “How do you like that? … And where was Trevino going? I said they had to play a clean game, already it’s dirty. That’s awful. And because Trevino’s really slow, where is he running to?”
Great clip here. John Sterling accidentally calls the Guardians the Indians, gives an aggressive apology leading into Ma and Pa Pinstripe getting absolutely disgusted with a Yankee getting picked off. pic.twitter.com/Vy8vb3WRu5

In a postseason series, giving away outs can be detrimental, and the Yankees have done so three times in just two games. Trevino’s mistake wiped out a potential big inning, and Cleveland soon capitalized by taking a 2–1 lead.
