Georgia Bulldogs Reclaim Top Spot as Oklahoma Takes a Hit in 247Sports SEC Poll After Week 8

Week 8 was a disastrous one for Oklahoma.

After suffering a heavy defeat to rival Texas in the Red River Rivalry, the Sooners returned home only to face an even worse setback against South Carolina, marking the team’s most significant home loss in a decade. A lackluster offensive display, punctuated by three quick turnovers that put OU in a 21-point hole just six minutes into the game, led to a 35-9 defeat against former assistant Shane Beamer and his South Carolina squad.

This poor performance prompted immediate changes, as head coach Brent Venables announced the firing of offensive coordinator Seth Littrell after just seven games, with Joe Jon Finley stepping in to handle play-calling for the remaining five regular-season games. The Sooners now sit at 4-3 overall and 1-3 in the SEC, facing four top-25 teams in their final league games.

Meanwhile, Week 8 was eventful beyond Norman, featuring high-stakes matchups like Texas vs. Georgia and Alabama vs. Tennessee, with the Bulldogs and Vols emerging victorious.

These outcomes prompted a shakeup in the 247Sports SEC poll for Week 9, with Georgia regaining the top position following its win over Texas, which had held the No. 1 ranking for the previous two weeks. Oklahoma fell from No. 11 to No. 14 in this week’s rankings.
