Browns Bombshell: Star DE Myles Garrett Sparks Frenzy with Trade Rumors

The Cleveland Browns’ season seems nearly finished after suffering their fifth consecutive loss and losing quarterback Deshaun Watson to a season-ending Achilles injury in a Week 7 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.

These events have significant implications for the franchise’s future, and it’s clear that NFL teams are already taking notice. On October 21, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported that the Browns have received inquiries about star defensive end Myles Garrett.

“Given their 1–6 record and the recent trade of [Amari] Cooper, the Browns can expect phone calls,” Breer noted. “While I don’t believe they’ll trade Myles Garrett, Denzel Ward, or Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, there’s been some interest. However, players like Za’Darius Smith or Jack Conklin could attract attention and might be more likely to be dealt.

Browns Facing Dilemma with Costly, Underachieving Roster

Cleveland’s front office finds itself in a challenging situation with its expensive roster.

The team has invested heavily, tying itself up financially in an attempt to create a Super Bowl window. Since the ill-fated trade and contract for Deshaun Watson, the closest the franchise has come to success was earning a Wildcard spot in last season’s playoffs, where they were swiftly eliminated by the Houston Texans in a humiliating defeat.

Now at 1-6, it’s time for the Browns to consider unloading some of their burdensome contracts to gain draft capital and start rebuilding for next season. However, they must tread carefully to avoid giving away too much, as the roster will still be costly in 2025. The futures of general manager Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski likely hinge on Cleveland’s ability to compete meaningfully next year.

Myles Garrett, under a $125 million contract through 2026 with an average cap hit of about $20 million over the next two years, is a key asset. Given that he’s the reigning Defensive Player of the Year at a premium position, his contract is relatively favorable for the Browns.

However, trading their best player—who is on a fair deal given his production and the market for his position—could severely damage a defense that was the best in the NFL just a year ago.

Still, if a team were to present a compelling offer, including multiple first-round draft picks for the 28-year-old Garrett, it might be an opportunity the Browns couldn’t ignore.

Browns Set to Move More Players Before NFL Trade Deadline

Cleveland can no longer afford to stay stagnant and must take action regarding a struggling team that lacks the younger, more affordable talent found on most other rosters—largely due to the significant draft capital lost in the Watson trade back in March 2022.

As a result, Browns fans should prepare for additional roster sell-offs leading up to the November 5 trade deadline. This will likely lead to more challenges and losses this season as Cleveland competes in a tough AFC North Division.
