Jon Gruden Greatest Disappointment A Shocking Meltdown

Antonio Brown’s brief 2019 season warrants closer examination. Six months after being traded from the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Oakland Raiders, he was released just before the start of the season.

The day before his release, the Raiders had declared that despite his cryptic social media posts and rumors of his discontent, he would play in Week 1 against the Denver Broncos.

The timeline is remarkable: Brown requested his release on social media at noon ET, the Raiders granted it at 4:01 p.m. ET, and by 5:19 p.m. ET, he had signed a one-year deal with the New England Patriots.

He suited up for one game with the Patriots against the Dolphins, delivering an impressive performance, but soon faced off-field allegations, leading to his release the following week.

This tumultuous offseason set the stage for a chaotic start to the regular season, with Raiders head coach Jon Gruden having a front-row view of the drama.

Gruden has been gradually re-engaging with the public through TikTok and football podcasts. Recently, on The Pacman Jones Show, he discussed Brown’s short time with the Raiders.

I think AB was at a point in his life where he was looking for something different than what we had to offer,” Gruden said, expressing his disappointment. He clarified that it wasn’t Brown’s character that let him down, but rather the missed opportunity to work with one of the decade’s top receivers, unable to motivate him for Week 1.

Gruden appears saddened that he never had the chance to coach Brown. Despite Brown’s off-field issues, many believe he will eventually be inducted into the Hall of Fame, boasting 928 catches for 12,291 yards and 88 touchdowns, along with 187 punt returns for 1,761 yards.

It’s intriguing to ponder how things might have unfolded if Brown had played in the 2019 season opener. What impact could he have had on the Raiders? We’ll never know, as he never took the field as an official Raider.
