The transformation of the Denver Broncos’ defense in the 2024 season has been nothing short of exhilarating. Through the first seven games, the Broncos have recorded an astonishing 28 sacks, marking the third-best tally in franchise history. Not only that, but they are also leading the league in quarterback pressures, a feat few anticipated at the season’s outset. Two players have been pivotal in driving this success. Third-year edge rusher Nik Bonitto is on a remarkable streak, having registered a sack in each of the last five games. This achievement harkens back to the days of future Hall of Famer Von Miller, who was a dominant force in the Mile High City. If Bonitto manages to secure a sack against the Carolina Panthers this weekend, he will tie Miller’s impressive six-game streak.
Alongside Bonitto, interior defensive lineman Zach Allen is having an All-Pro caliber season. His 26-percent pass rush win rate is the highest among all interior defensive linemen in the NFL, and he leads the position group with 39 pressures through just seven games. Given his outstanding performance, it would be prudent for the Broncos to consider extending his contract after the season—he has certainly earned it.
However, the defensive success isn’t limited to just these two players. Veteran Jonathon Cooper has also made significant contributions, racking up 4.5 sacks this season. Rookie Jonah Ellis has flashed potential with 2 sacks during limited opportunities, while recent acquisition John Franklin-Myers has added another three sacks to the mix.
