Panthers Snatch Star Linebacker from Detroit Lions

The Carolina Panthers are shaking up their roster, recently adding a new player at the cost of the Detroit Lions. NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reports that the Panthers have signed linebacker Cam Gill from the Lions’ practice squad, giving their defense a significant boost.

Gill, previously on the Lions’ practice squad this season, will now have the chance to make his mark on the active roster in Carolina. With his speed and aggressive playing style, Gill could significantly impact the Panthers’ linebacker group, which has struggled with inconsistency this season.

Gill entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent from Wagner College, initially signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While his time in Tampa Bay saw limited action, he contributed on special teams and in specific defensive roles, even earning a Super Bowl ring during the 2020 season.

The Lions brought him onto their practice squad to further develop his skills, but now he’ll have the chance to showcase his talents with increased playing time in Carolina.

The Panthers, currently struggling with a 1-6 record, are clearly seeking to strengthen their defensive unit in hopes of turning their season around. Along with Gill, they also signed defensive tackle Jonathan Harris from the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad, highlighting their urgent need for reinforcements on defense.

For the Lions, losing Gill is a minor setback, but they must continue to bolster their defensive depth as they pursue a playoff spot.
