Lifts the Curtain on Team’s QBs: Inside Trade Talks Exposed
With the trade deadline just over a week away, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton addressed interest in the team’s backup quarterbacks. Rookie first-round pick Bo Nix holds the QB1 spot, but veterans Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson are both potential trade candidates, especially as they will be free agents after the season. It makes sense for the Broncos to extract value before they potentially leave for nothing.
Payton, however, is hesitant to part with anyone in the QB room. He deferred questions about trade possibilities to general manager George Payton, noting that the Broncos have received inquiries. “We’ll get teasers,” he said. “A team a couple weeks ago [called and said], ‘Hey.’ Not even, and then you don’t [take it any further].”
With two weeks left until the deadline, Payton emphasized a focus on the present. “There’s a group of teams shopping a certain list of players. And some teams are easier to deal with than others. But right now, I like where we’re at,” he added.

Lifts the Curtain on Team’s QBs: Inside Trade Talks Exposed
The strength of Payton’s commitment to the backup QBs may depend on the offers they receive. Stidham, who signed a two-year, $10 million contract, was QB1 in training camp but fell behind Nix. Wilson, acquired from the Jets in a draft pick swap, has been QB3 since his arrival.
“Stidham lost the training camp competition, so he has been QB2 on game days,” wrote ESPN’s Jeff Legwold. However, the Broncos are intrigued by Wilson’s potential. Holding onto both backups may be wise, especially given their tight salary cap situation. As Mike Klis pointed out, trading a starting-caliber QB to an AFC team could bolster a rival, complicating the Broncos’ playoff hopes.
