Sudden Slide: Oklahoma Sooners Face Turbulent Times in SEC Transition

The Oklahoma Sooners are having a challenging season, struggling to find competitiveness. Following their loss to Ole Miss today, they’ve achieved a dubious milestone not seen since 1998: losing three consecutive games by double digits.

This 2024 season has been marked by inconsistency, particularly in their first year in the SEC, where they now hold a 1-4 record, with their sole victory against Auburn. What was expected to be a promising transition has turned into a disappointing campaign, especially given their offensive struggles against stronger opponents.

After the game, head coach Brent Venables discussed his approach to lifting team morale following the three losses. “You have to be honest with them; sometimes the truth hurts… These players care deeply and respect their legacy as Sooners.

They believe in our process.” If the team’s performance doesn’t improve, Venables could find himself under pressure, as he was brought in to elevate the program. His record stands at 20-14 over two and a half seasons, including a 10-3 finish last year, which raised expectations that have since been unmet.

Despite the setbacks, Venables remains optimistic about his players’ determination. “These guys won’t flinch, I promise you… I know people might think they’ll give up, but not these guys.” The Sooners face a tough schedule ahead, but there’s still an opportunity to secure a bowl game berth, starting with an upcoming home game against Maine, followed by matchups against Missouri, Alabama, and LSU to end the season.
