How Seahawks felt the absence of DK Metcalf in passing game

The Seahawks listed DK Metcalf as doubtful on Friday for their 31-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills, holding onto the faint hope that he might still play.

Privately, however, they accepted the reality that they’d likely be without their star receiver.

This was only the second missed game in Metcalf’s six-year NFL career—the first being last year against Arizona due to hip and rib injuries. This time, he was sidelined by a sprained MCL from the previous week’s 34-14 victory in Atlanta.

“I mean, he’s only missed, what, two games in his career?” Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald remarked. “That says a lot about his work ethic. He tried everything possible to play, but it became clear as the week went on that he couldn’t make it.”

Metcalf’s absence was evident as Geno Smith was limited to just 212 yards, a steep drop from his NFL-leading average of 283.6 yards per game. For the first time this season, he didn’t throw a touchdown pass.

Smith went 13 of 18 for only 123 yards with one interception before rallying in the fourth quarter to complete 8 of 11 passes for 89 yards after the Bills had taken a commanding 31-3 lead.
