East Carolina Star Player Named American Defensive Player of the Week
After an impressive performance in East Carolina soccer’s 2-0 victory over Florida Atlantic on Sunday, junior Juliana Viera has been named the American Athletic Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week, as announced on Monday. Senior Samantha Moxie also earned a spot on the weekly Honorable Mention list.
Viera played a key role in the Pirates‘ strong defensive showing, allowing only four shots, with just one on target, contributing to the team’s eighth clean sheet of the season. She also made her mark offensively, delivering a fantastic free kick assist for Caitlen-Star Dolan Boodram’s goal, marking her fourth assist of the season, which ties her for the team lead. This recognition is Viera’s first of the season and the team’s seventh overall.
Moxie contributed significantly as well, scoring the game-winning goal in the 15th minute, her second of the season.
Viera, Moxie, and the Pirates will return to their home field at Johnson Stadium for one last time this season on Thursday at 7 p.m., hosting Rice for a Black Out game on Halloween night. The team has already clinched a spot in the American Athletic Conference Tournament scheduled for November 4-10 in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
