Carlos Alcaraz Hit with Rankings Catastrophe, Unleashing a Thrilling Showdown with Jannik Sinner
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have stood out as the top players on the ATP Tour this year, sharing the Grand Slam titles and establishing themselves as the new Big 2 in men’s tennis.
Sinner won both the Australian Open and the US Open, while Alcaraz triumphed at the challenging French Open and Wimbledon during a busy summer in Europe. Despite their success, the ATP Rankings don’t fully reflect their dominance at the ATP Finals. Alexander Zverev has moved ahead of Alcaraz after reaching the final of the Paris Masters.
After taking some time off to recover from a demanding season, Zverev returned to form in Paris, where he beat Holger Rune 6-3, 7-6(4) in the semi-finals. This victory sets him up as the second seed for the ATP Finals in Turin later this month.
I think I made it a bit tough for myself, but he’s a champion. This is probably his favorite tournament and court, yet I’m happy to be in my second final here, Zverev said. “I’m looking forward to it.
When asked about his rise to No. 2 in the ATP Rankings, Zverev acknowledged that Alcaraz is still ahead of him following an impressive 2023 season.
It’s great to be back at my highest ranking, he said. Of course, I want to climb higher, but in my opinion, Jannik has had the best year, and Carlos is second with his two Grand Slam wins. Even if I’m ahead in the rankings, those titles are significant, and I still consider them the top two players in the world.
Zverev’s position means he will lead one of the groups at the ATP Finals, creating the potential for a matchup against either Alcaraz or Sinner in the group stage. His performance in Paris has also improved his standing in the ATP Race rankings for 2024, which determines seeding for the Finals.
As a result, Zverev will avoid facing Alcaraz or Sinner in the opening round, and he might not encounter both if they end up in the same group.
Given his recent form, Zverev is certainly a player to watch at the ATP Finals as he aims for his third end-of-season title.
