Alabama on the Verge to Lose Top Starting WR to SEC Top Rival. Despite initial doubts about his recruiting abilities, new Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer has made a strong start in Tuscaloosa. While Nick Saban left behind the nation’s No. 2 recruiting class as a parting gift, DeBoer has earned significant praise for assembling Alabama’s current top-ranked class.
This achievement is particularly impressive, given that recruiting was one of the main concerns surrounding him. However, recent reports could temper Alabama fans’ excitement. According to On3’s Steve Wiltfong, five-star wide receiver Caleb Cunningham is being heavily pursued by Ole Miss, and he is expected to visit Oxford on consecutive weekends.
Wiltfong told Josh Newberg, “For me, it starts and ends with Ole Miss. I see them as Alabama’s biggest competition for Cunningham. He was just on campus for the Oklahoma game, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he returns for the Georgia matchup.” Wiltfong added, “Ole Miss has the No. 2 offense in the nation, including the No. 1 passing offense and the No. 4 scoring offense. Cunningham is drawn to Lane Kiffin and sees a real opportunity to become a star there.”
Wiltfong also noted that Cunningham, a Mississippi native, feels more recognized and appreciated at Ole Miss. “During his last visit, he was signing autographs and taking pictures with fans. He really feels his personal brand is growing there, which bodes well for Lane Kiffin and the Rebels.” Losing Cunningham would be a significant blow to Alabama’s recruiting class, which currently includes five five-star commitments.
However, the Tide class still boasts a strong group of young receivers, including top recruit Ryan Williams. According to On3, Cunningham is ranked as the No. 16 player in the nation, with an NIL valuation of $449,000 and over 24,000 social media followers.
