Broncos Top Starter Make Roster After Long Time Injury
One of the key updates for the Broncos is the return of starting safety PJ Locke, who will be back in action for the game, providing a timely boost to the defense.
Heading into Friday, the Broncos had a mostly clean injury report, with all players except for linebacker Drew Sanders listed as full participants in practice. Sanders, who’s recovering from an Achilles injury, had his 21-day practice window activated, but it remains uncertain whether he will be available to play
On the other hand, the Chiefs will be missing one of their key offensive playmakers for Sunday’s matchup, as JuJu Smith-Schuster has been ruled out. However, this is far from unfamiliar territory for quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has dealt with injuries to several of his offensive weapons throughout the season.
While Smith-Schuster struggled in his one year with the New England Patriots, he’s had more success in Kansas City, where he’s totaled 12 targets, 9 receptions, 167 yards, and a touchdown this year.
Even with the absence of Smith-Schuster and other key offensive players like Hollywood Brown, Rashee Rice, and Isiah Pacheco, the Chiefs still boast plenty of talent on offense.
Travis Kelce remains the focal point, leading the team with 64 targets through eight games. The Chiefs have also worked to get first-round pick Xavier Worthy more involved, and he ranks second on the team with 39 targets.
Recently, the Chiefs acquired veteran wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins in a trade with the Tennessee Titans, and he’s already made an impact, catching two touchdowns in Kansas City’s Monday night victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Additionally, Kareem Hunt has been effective in his return to the Chiefs, further bolstering their offensive depth.
While the absence of JuJu Smith-Schuste may not seem like a game-changing loss for the Chiefs, it does mean one fewer playmaker for the Broncos to worry about.
Smith-Schuster had been converting a high percentage of his opportunities into significant plays this season, so his absence will be noticed. Overall, despite facing some injuries, the Chiefs have continued to find ways to adapt, getting contributions from new faces and stepping up players. Meanwhile, the Broncos will look to take advantage of their own good health and the return of key players like Locke as they prepare for the challenge ahead.
