Last week, the Detroit Lions had to make some roster adjustments, which led to the loss of rookie wide receiver Isaiah Williams. He was waived and subsequently claimed by the Cincinnati Bengals before the Lions could re-sign him to their practice squad.
To fill the gap, Detroit signed Maurice Alexander to their practice squad on Tuesday, according to Aaron Wilson. Alexander has been with the Lions on and off over the past two seasons, including four game appearances in 2022, where he served mainly as the team’s kick returner. During those games, he averaged a solid 24.3 yards per return. Though Alexander competed for a spot on the receiver roster this offseason, he did not make the 53-man roster or land a spot on the practice squad. He has not been signed by any other team since then.
In other roster news, the Lions waived linebacker Abraham Beauplan on Monday. Beauplan had been added to the active roster on Saturday to provide an emergency linebacker option with both Malcolm Rodriguez and Jalen Reeves-Maybin unavailable for the game against the Texans. He played 11 special teams snaps in the game. There’s a good chance Beauplan could be re-signed to the practice squad, and his release might signal that Rodriguez, who has missed the last two games with an ankle injury, could be ready to return.
With these moves, the Lions now have two open spots on their practice squad and one on the 53-man roster. Notably, Isaiah Thomas, who was waived last Thursday, cleared waivers on Monday, and it’s likely Beauplan will do the same on Tuesday. Both could potentially return to the practice squad.
As for the open spot on the 53-man roster, the Lions have several players on injured reserve who have returned to practice and could be activated soon, including defensive tackle Brodric Martin, cornerback Emmanuel Moseley, and safety Ifeatu Melifonwu.
