Yankees Eye All-Star Trade to Fill Second Baseman Spot
The New York Yankees could look to free agency to replace Gleyber Torres, but if they don’t find the right fit, the trade market may be their next option. One intriguing target is Brandon Lowe of the Tampa Bay Rays, who, despite battling injuries in recent seasons, remains a strong offensive threat when healthy. If the Yankees are willing to take a chance on his durability, Lowe could be a valuable addition.
Mike Axisa of CBS Sports recently linked Lowe to the Yankees, noting the Rays’ tendency to trade key players each offseason. Lowe’s $10.5 million salary for 2025, the highest on Tampa’s roster, makes him a candidate to be moved. His ability to play second base and first base, combined with his left-handed power, would be a good fit for Yankee Stadium’s right-field porch. Axisa suggested that while an intradivision trade is tricky, it’s not out of the question.
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com also identified Lowe as a potential trade candidate, especially if the Rays look to free up payroll. Although Lowe’s injury history is concerning—having missed over 50 games in each of the past two seasons—he still managed to hit 21 home runs in both years. His $10.5 million option for 2025 and an $11.5 million club option for 2026 give any team acquiring him two years of control at a reasonable price.
For the Yankees, the key question is whether Lowe represents an upgrade over Torres. While both have posted similar numbers at times, Lowe’s power and production when healthy could make him a more dynamic option. However, the Yankees will need to weigh Lowe’s injury risks against his potential upside before making a move.
