Padres Strike Gold with ‘Dominant’ Braves Lefty
Dylan from The Wrightway Sports Network recently suggested that former Atlanta Braves lefty Max Fried is likely to sign with the San Diego Padres in free agency, although the team will face stiff competition. He believes a return to Atlanta seems increasingly unlikely for Fried.
Dylan emphasized that the Padres need “elite consistency” in their rotation to compete with the league’s top teams in 2025. Fried, with his strong performance and leadership, would be an ideal fit to help elevate the Padres’ postseason chances. He also noted that San Diego has the financial flexibility to make a significant move for Fried.
In 2024, Fried posted a 3.25 ERA and a 1.164 WHIP, with 166 strikeouts for the Braves. The two-time All-Star finished the season with an 11-10 record and led MLB with two complete games and one shutout. These numbers solidified his status as one of the best pitchers in the league.
Fried would provide a major boost to the Padres’ rotation, forming a potent trio alongside ace Dylan Cease and Michael King, an All-MLB Second Team honoree. While signing Fried would be a costly endeavor, the Padres are positioned to make a big splash in the market, with a projected payroll of $205.2 million for 2025.
BVM Sports reports that Fried could command a seven-year deal worth $25-$30 million per year. Given their financial flexibility, the Padres could afford to add Fried, significantly enhancing their chances of surpassing the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers and competing for a Fall Classic title in 2025.
