Super Bowl Contenders Strengthen Roster with Buccaneers Standout

Kaevon Merriweather didn’t remain a free agent for long after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Just two days later, on November 20, the Detroit Lions added him to their practice squad, offering the Michigan native a chance to return home and join a team chasing Super Bowl glory.

Merriweather, an undrafted free agent from Iowa in 2023, earned a spot on the Buccaneers roster as a rookie and started two games. In 2024, he played nine games, primarily contributing on special teams—a role that could make him an immediate asset for the Lions.

Benjamin Raven of MLive.com highlighted Merriweather’s deep Michigan roots, noting his high school days at Romulus and Belleville, where he excelled in both football and basketball. At Iowa, Merriweather developed into a standout defensive back, recording 118 tackles, four interceptions, and one forced fumble over four years.

A Michigan Homecoming with a Twist

Returning to play for the Lions is especially meaningful for Merriweather, who grew up a devoted fan despite the team’s struggles. Born in Belleville in December 1999, he witnessed some of the Lions’ darkest years, including their infamous 0-16 season in 2008.

“I take pride in being one of the few players from Michigan representing here,” Merriweather said at the 2023 NFL Combine. “I grew up a Lions fan, and it’s incredible to see their turnaround. I think they’re just going to keep building on what they’ve accomplished.”

Joining the Lions, a rising team in the NFC, might turn out to be a blessing in disguise for Merriweather. His release from Tampa Bay could lead to an even better opportunity with his hometown team.

Buccaneers’ Defensive Struggles

Meanwhile, the Buccaneers are facing significant defensive issues. At 4-6 after four consecutive losses, they’re clinging to slim playoff hopes. Tampa Bay’s defense ranks 31st in the NFL, having allowed 21 passing touchdowns through 10 games—placing them 30th in that category.

Tampa has weathered tough stretches before, rallying in both 2022 and 2023 to secure playoff spots. However, with injuries piling up and a struggling secondary, their road to another late-season turnaround looks steeper than ever.
