It’s been quite the season for some quarterbacks, and for the Miami Dolphins, it’s been a rollercoaster at the position. Tua Tagovailoa suffered yet another concussion early in the season, sidelining him for several games. In his absence, the Dolphins struggled to fill the void.
At 4-6 and on a two-game winning streak, Miami’s playoff hopes aren’t over. While making a Wild Card spot will require some effort, it’s still within reach mathematically.
But if the Dolphins push for a postseason spot, could they consider addressing their backup quarterback situation? With Tyler Huntley on injured reserve, Skylar Thompson is the only backup option available.
However, on Friday morning, a new possibility surfaced. The New York Giants officially parted ways with quarterback Daniel Jones, releasing him at his request. Earlier in the week, Jones had been benched in favor of Tommy DeVito, with Drew Lock staying as the backup.
Just like that, the Jones era was over. Now on waivers, once he clears, Jones will be free to sign with any team interested.
It’s no surprise that many are already connecting Miami to the former Giants starter.
Signing Daniel Jones would be a wise move by the Dolphins
NFL Media’s Gregg Rosenthal believes the Dolphins would be wise to pursue Daniel Jones once he clears waivers, and the idea makes a lot of sense.
Jones could fit well in Miami’s offense, especially with the team’s strong commitment to the run game. Head coach Mike McDaniel has done an excellent job tailoring the offense around Tua Tagovailoa, showing trust in his quarterback. The same approach could be taken if Jones were called upon. His mobility adds a new layer to the offense, giving McDaniel more options in certain situations.
While Jones has faced criticism for his turnover-prone play and questionable decision-making, the chance to sign a quarterback with 69 career starts and postseason experience is too valuable to pass up.
This isn’t necessarily about a long-term solution for Miami, or the idea of McDaniel “fixing” Jones. Instead, it’s about seizing the opportunity to improve a position that has been a point of focus all season.
