The Yankees announced that they did not tender contracts to infielder Jon Berti and left-hander Tim Mayza before Friday’s 8 p.m. ET deadline, making both players free agents.
However, New York reached agreements on one-year deals with right-hander JT Brubaker and outfielder Trent Grisham. Grisham will earn $5 million, with up to $250,000 in performance-based incentives, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. He earned $5.5 million last season.
The Yankees have also extended contract offers to infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr., left-hander Nestor Cortes, right-handers Scott Effross, Mark Leiter Jr., and Clarke Schmidt, as well as catcher Jose Trevino.
Teams and players have until January 9 to finalize agreements, after which salary arbitration figures will be exchanged.
Berti, 34, spent much of the regular season on the injured list due to a left groin strain and a left calf strain. Acquired from the Marlins on March 27, he batted .273/.342/.318 with one home run and six RBIs in 25 games. In the postseason, he went 2-for-11 (.182) with a walk over four games in the first two rounds.
Mayza, 32, was signed on July 12 after being released by the Blue Jays. He posted a 4.00 ERA in 15 appearances during the regular season, totaling 18 innings. He did not allow a run in three postseason appearances, including one in the World Series.
Brubaker, 31, was acquired from the Pirates on March 29 but did not pitch in the majors this season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
As part of the trade with the Padres for Juan Soto, Grisham, who turned 28 earlier this month, hit .190 with nine home runs and 31 RBIs in 76 regular-season games. He appeared in all three rounds of the postseason but did not play. Despite being a below-league-average hitter (94 OPS+) throughout his six-year career, Grisham is a standout defensive outfielder, winning two Gold Glove Awards for his center field play in 2020 and 2022 with San Diego.
