Oklahoma Upsets Alabama: Crimson Tide Faces $300K in Field-Storming Fines

Kalen DeBoer and the Alabama Crimson Tide suffered their third loss of the season on Saturday, as the Oklahoma Sooners pulled off a stunning upset over the No. 7-ranked team. Alabama struggled throughout the game, with Brent Venables‘ defense making it difficult for quarterback Jalen Milroe to run the offense. After scoring just a field goal in the first quarter, Alabama failed to score again, totaling only 234 yards for the game. Meanwhile, Oklahoma built a 24-3 lead by the end of the third quarter and held on for the win. Running back Xavier Robinson scored two rushing touchdowns to lead the Sooners to victory.

The Oklahoma fans at Gaylord FamilyOklahoma Memorial Stadium were overjoyed by the win. However, they celebrated prematurely, rushing the field with 28 seconds left on the clock. As a result, Oklahoma is expected to be fined $100,000 for the field-storming incident, according to the SEC’s competition area entry policy. This fine will be paid to Alabama, adding to the $300,000 that Alabama has now collected due to field-rushing incidents. In previous losses to Vanderbilt and Tennessee, those teams were also fined $100,000 each for their fans storming the field after upsetting the Crimson Tide.

While $300,000 is certainly a significant amount, it’s clear that Alabama fans would prefer a victory over the money. Under Nick Saban’s leadership, the Crimson Tide have been accustomed to dominance, making this season’s struggles particularly unexpected. In fact, the last time Alabama had at least three losses in a season was all the way back in 2010.
