The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, despite having one of the NFL’s weakest defenses, remain firmly in the playoff race with a 5-6 record as they prepare for a Week 13 matchup against the Carolina Panthers.
Their ability to stay competitive without a dominant edge rusher highlights the impressive performance of quarterback Baker Mayfield and the offense. However, strengthening their pass rush in 2025 could be crucial for future success.
According to Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder, the Buccaneers might find the solution by targeting Los Angeles Chargers edge rusher Khalil Mack in free agency. Holder suggests Tampa Bay could bring in the six-time All-Pro and 2016 Defensive Player of the Year on a one-year deal.
“Tampa’s defense could use pass-rushing help right now, and the need could grow in the coming months—Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and Anthony Nelson are both impending 2025 free agents,” Holder noted. “While the Buccaneers have leaned toward younger players recently, adding veteran pass-rusher Khalil Mack would be a smart move. At 33, Mack remains a reliable situational edge rusher and could offer valuable leadership in the locker room.”
Mack is currently in the final year of a six-year, $141 million contract he signed with the Chicago Bears in 2018, which once made him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.
