According to Jon Morosi on MLB Network, the Red Sox are in a strong position to pursue a trade for White Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet, and the possibility is worth close attention. Morosi noted that Boston has the necessary prospects to make the deal happen, and recent reports suggest Wilyer Abreu’s name is being floated as a potential trade centerpiece. However, the White Sox, focused on a long-term rebuild, are seeking prospects who have yet to make their MLB debut, including top names like Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, or Kristian Campbell.

Abreu’s inclusion makes sense. He was one of the AL’s top rookies last season and appeals to Chicago, while the Red Sox have a surplus of left-handed hitting outfielders—especially if they land Juan Soto. Even if they don’t acquire Soto, Abreu is seen as expendable. Under team control until 2029 and not hitting arbitration until 2027, Abreu’s value is clear, but Chicago is looking for even longer-term assets, reinforcing their distant competitive timeline.

For the Red Sox, landing Crochet—a pitcher with Cy Young potential and two more years of affordable team control—would be valuable. However, Chicago’s high asking price suggests Boston may need to part with one of their top four prospects—Anthony, Mayer, Kristian Campbell, or Kyle Teel—to close the deal.

While a package centered around Abreu and lesser prospects might get Boston close, the White Sox’s insistence on acquiring a top, yet-to-debut player makes it unlikely that Boston can finalize the trade without sacrificing one of their elite prospects. Whether the Red Sox will meet that price remains a tough, debatable decision.
