After a breakout season last year, all eyes were on Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams to see if he could maintain that success. With injuries impacting the receiving corps, head coach Sean McVay had little choice but to lean heavily on Williams early this season—and the young back has delivered.
Currently ranked sixth in the NFL for rushing yards, Williams has totaled 11 touchdowns and leads the Rams in scrimmage yards by a wide margin. However, recent struggles with ball security have raised concerns. In the last four games, Williams has fumbled four times, including two in the Rams’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.
While Williams has been a standout performer, McVay acknowledges that this issue can’t continue. “That’s something we have to be better at, for sure,” McVay said after the Eagles game.
The Rams have generally been solid in terms of ball security this season, so turnovers especially from Williams, who has been so central to the offense—are a significant concern. The fumble that ended the Rams’ opening drive deep in Eagles territory was particularly costly. McVay reflected on how it impacted the game: “It was tough because I thought our offensive line came out ready to go. Kyren was hitting those holes, and we were in scoring position. To turn it over there was costly.”
The hope is that this is just a temporary slump for Williams, and that he will quickly resolve the issue. His role in the offense is too crucial for McVay to consider backing off unless the problem persists, which still seems unlikely.
Sean McVay believes Rams will respond well from humbling loss vs. Eagles
The Rams had a golden opportunity to secure a big win on Sunday night against the Eagles but couldn’t contain Saquon Barkley, ultimately falling short. Now sitting at 5-6, the Rams have little room for error, but head coach Sean McVay remains optimistic about his team’s ability to bounce back from this defeat.
“I thought we came out ready to go. The turnover really hurt us, obviously,” McVay said. “It was a one-possession game, they scored quickly coming out of the half, we matched it, but then it just got away from us.”
“There are humbling nights like this in football. It’s all about how you respond. I know this team has the capability to bounce back, and we’ll get ourselves off the mat and have a strong week of preparation ahead.”
