The New York Yankees have some major gaps to fill this offseason, and first base is one of their most pressing needs. With veteran Anthony Rizzo leaving via free agency, the team is exploring options to replace him. Among the top candidates are New York Mets power hitter Pete Alonso and Arizona Diamondbacks‘ Christian Walker. Alonso is expected to secure a six-year, $174 million deal, while Walker is projected for a more affordable three-year, $66 million contract.
FanSided’s Jacob Mountz recently advocated for the Yankees to pursue Walker, highlighting several reasons why he’s a great fit. Mountz pointed out that Walker is not only a top-tier defender at first base, but also has 30+ home run potential and a reasonable price tag. “The Yankees see Walker as the best bang for their buck,” Mountz wrote. In 2024, Walker posted a .251/.335/.468/.803 slash line with 26 home runs in 479 at-bats, despite battling injuries. Over the previous two seasons, he hit 36 and 33 home runs, respectively. Defensively, Walker has earned three Gold Gloves in a row.
Walker checks all the boxes for the Yankees: he’s affordable, provides stellar defense, and offers significant offensive upside. His ability to hit 30+ home runs and maintain an elite OPS makes him a perfect addition to the team. While his age might be a concern, it’s not something that has stopped the Yankees from signing free agents in the past.
