For generations, baseball fans have grown accustomed to the Red Sox and Yankees battling over top-tier free agents, and this offseason is no different. Both teams are reportedly in the hunt for Juan Soto, with the Yankees said to be increasing their efforts to retain the 26-year-old star. In addition to bolstering their lineups, both clubs are also seeking upgrades to their pitching rotations.
According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, Boston, New York, and the Orioles were contenders for Blake Snell, but the Dodgers ultimately secured the two-time Cy Young winner. Feinsand predicts that neither the Red Sox nor the Yankees will back down from pursuing other elite pitchers.
“The Red Sox and Yankees are believed to be seeking a left-handed starter, which could lead to a bidding war for Max Fried,” Feinsand reported. Boston may have an edge, as Fried is close friends with Lucas Giolito, and industry buzz has linked Fried more frequently to the Red Sox than the Yankees.
Should Boston miss out on Fried, Feinsand suggests they might pivot to targeting Garrett Crochet in a trade. While it’s possible the Red Sox could pursue both Fried and Crochet, the rivalry with New York adds extra intrigue to the offseason, giving Boston a chance to not only improve its roster but also outmaneuver a key division foe.
