Phillies Land Former MVP in $80M Three-Team Trade
The Philadelphia Phillies entered 2024 with World Series aspirations, clinching their first NL East title since 2011, only to fall short in the NLDS against the New York Mets. Looking ahead to 2025, the Phillies are poised for significant roster changes as they aim to return to championship contention.
While free agency is an option, a trade seems more likely, with All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm rumored to be on the block. ESPN’s Dave Schoenfield proposed a bold three-team trade that would send 2019 NL MVP Cody Bellinger to Philadelphia, potentially adding a powerful bat to their lineup for the upcoming season.
Three-Team Trade Proposal:
- Phillies Receive: Outfielder/First Baseman Cody Bellinger
- Seattle Mariners Receive: Third Baseman Alec Bohm, Second Baseman Nico Hoerner
- Chicago Cubs Receive: Right-Handed Pitcher Luis Castillo, Catcher Harry Ford
In this bold trade suggestion, ESPN’s Dave Schoenfield envisions the Phillies upgrading their outfield by acquiring 2019 NL MVP Cody Bellinger. With Bryce Harper firmly at first base, Bellinger could take over in center field at Citizens Bank Park. Meanwhile, the Phillies would rely on Edmundo Sosa to handle third base until top prospect Aidan Miller is ready by 2026.
Schoenfield adds that while this trade is unlikely, it highlights the creative possibilities teams can explore to fill roster gaps. And if the deal were to happen, some cash or prospects from Chicago and Seattle might help balance the difference between Bellinger’s and Bohm’s salaries.
Will it happen? Probably not. Is it fun? Definitely!
Bellinger would boost the Phillies’ offensive production in center field without sacrificing much defensively. As a left-handed slugger, he’d provide a powerful bat at the top of the lineup, while his extensive postseason experience with the Los Angeles Dodgers would bring valuable October leadership to Philadelphia.
