Phillies acquire superstar closer in win-win deal with Brewers

A recent mock trade between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Milwaukee Brewers suggests that both teams could benefit from a deal. The Phillies are in need of bullpen help and are also looking to move All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm.

On the other hand, the Brewers have a strong closer in Devin Williams, who is under contract after being bought out this offseason. Additionally, Milwaukee is preparing for the possibility that star third baseman Willy Adames could leave either this fall or next winter.

Considering all factors, the situation is ideal for both teams to strike a mutually beneficial deal. Jim Bowden of The Athletic proposed a trade where the Phillies acquire Devin Williams and a prospect in exchange for Alec Bohm.

Bowden explained, “The Phillies need an elite, right-handed, high-leverage closer, and I think this trade makes a lot of sense for them, especially if they can sign either Alex Bregman or Willy Adames to replace Bohm at third base. I don’t expect Phillies prospect Aidan Miller to be ready for the majors until at least 2026 or 2027.”

From the Brewers’ perspective, Bowden added, “I also like this trade because Bohm would address third base and serve as a replacement for Adames, allowing Ortiz to play shortstop with Brice Turang staying at second.”

Devin Williams, a two-time National League Reliever of the Year, had a stellar 2024 season despite being limited to just 22 games. The 30-year-old posted an impressive 1.25 ERA, 0.969 WHIP, 38 strikeouts, and 14 saves. Had he played a full season, he was on track for a career-high 38 saves, reflecting his dominance when healthy.

On the other hand, Alec Bohm earned his first All-Star selection in 2024 due to his strong offensive performance.

The Nebraska native posted an impressive .280/.332/.448 line, with 15 home runs and 97 RBIs last season.

Williams would be a high-quality closer for the Phillies, providing a crucial upgrade as they aim for a World Series title next season. For the Brewers, acquiring Bohm would bring in a promising, up-and-coming talent who could potentially overcome his second-half struggles from 2024 and make a significant impact for a National League contender. In such a deal, the Phillies would likely come out as the big winners.
