Former Detroit Lions first-round pick Eric Ebron is retiring from professional football. Ebron, who was selected by the Lions as the 10th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, made the announcement on Instagram on Wednesday. Over four seasons with Detroit (2014-17), the tight end played 56 games, recording 2,070 yards and 11 touchdowns on 186 receptions.
“A career is a career!!” the 31-year-old wrote in his post. “I’m proud of me! Thankful for everyone along this journey.”
The selection of Eric Ebron by the Detroit Lions in the 2014 NFL Draft was met with skepticism. Fans questioned the decision to pick a tight end so early, and Ebron’s critics were further validated as defensive lineman Aaron Donald, chosen just two spots later at No. 12 by the Rams, blossomed into a superstar.
Ebron was released by the Lions in March 2018 and quickly signed with the Indianapolis Colts. Over two seasons in Indianapolis, he accumulated 1,125 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns, with 14 of those touchdowns coming in 2018. That year, Ebron had the best season of his career, earning a Pro Bowl selection.
Standing 6-foot-4, Ebron finished his career with two seasons in Pittsburgh, contributing to the Steelers‘ 12-4 record in 2020 with 558 yards and five touchdowns. Before being drafted by the Lions, Ebron had a standout career at North Carolina, where he posted 973 receiving yards and three touchdowns as a junior.
