McVay weighs quarterback’s future with Rams ahead of 2025 free agency.

The Los Angeles Ram’s signing of Jimmy Garoppolo to a $3.18 million contract during the offseason sparked confusion across Southern California.

Fans questioned why the Rams signed a 33-year-old quarterback to back up their 36-year-old starter, especially when younger, potentially more promising players like Gardner Minshew, Sam Darnold, or Zach Wilson were available via trade. Was LA confident in Stetson Bennett’s long-term development, or did they see trading Stafford mid-season as a possibility if the season faltered, which it nearly did before the bye?

Garoppolo may not have played much for the 6-6 Rams so far, but he’s proven to be a solid backup. When asked about his future in LA, McVay expressed his admiration for the veteran quarterback, noting he’s enjoyed working with him and would welcome continuing the partnership if it makes sense for both sides.

McVay praised Garoppolo’s contributions in practice, highlighting his long-time respect for him as both a competitor and teammate. While he’s focused on the current season and Stafford’s leadership, McVay indicated he’d be open to working with Garoppolo beyond this year if the situation aligns.

As for Garoppolo’s potential return in 2025, McVay is open to it if the quarterback remains a good fit, but understands if he chooses to explore other options, confident the Rams have given him the tools to succeed wherever he plays next.
