The New York Rangers‘ season continues to struggle after another tough defeat, 5-1 against the New Jersey Devils at Madison Square Garden on Monday night. Despite the team’s challenges, Adam Fox remains one of the few bright spots, although there is one area where he’s looking to improve.
The 26-year-old defenseman has yet to score a goal this season. Looking back to last year, his goal drought now stretches to 40 games.
Yes, that’s correct—40 games.
Last season, the former Norris Trophy winner recorded a career-high 17 goals, despite missing 10 games due to a knee injury. He finished his 2023-24 campaign with a goal in the Rangers’ final regular-season game against the Ottawa Senators on April 15. However, he hasn’t found the back of the net since.
Fox went all 16 games during the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs without scoring and has now gone 24 games this season without a goal. While he continues to collect points, with 56 assists last season, an additional eight in the playoffs, and 20 so far this year, his lack of goals is noticeable.
Despite this, Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette isn’t worried about Fox’s goal drought.
“He’s been really competitive,” Laviolette said on Tuesday. “He is shooting the puck. There have been a couple of times recently where he’s gotten shots through the first layer but they didn’t make it through the second, or they got blocked early. So, he’s trying to deliver pucks and get shots on net.”
Fox registered a season-high five shots on goal in the loss to the Devils but still hasn’t scored. According to Natural Stat Trick, Fox has had 33 individual scoring chances, including three in high-danger areas. His expected goals total is 2.25, which isn’t much, but it’s still more than zero.
