Big-Time Backer Joining The Flock; Welcome To Oregon

It was announced just before the early signing period that the Oregon Ducks had secured 4-star linebacker commit Gavin Nix, who had previously been committed to the Miami Hurricanes.

On Wednesday, Nix officially signed his national letter of intent with Oregon, joining a top-10 recruiting class and becoming one of its most important recruits, as just the second linebacker in the class.

Ranked as the No. 231 overall player and No. 24 linebacker nationally, Nix hails from IMG Academy in Florida. He is making the move from Miami, where former Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal was in charge, to Eugene, where Dan Lanning now leads the Ducks.

Here’s a closer look at Nix and what he brings to Oregon.

Gavin Nix Position Outlook

Although Nix is a highly talented player with great potential at Oregon, it’s likely that he will redshirt as a freshman, initially contributing on special teams as he begins his career with the Ducks.

Oregon Ducks Linebacker Depth

The Ducks are set to lose two of their top linebackers this year, with Jeffrey Bassa and Bryce Boettcher graduating. Jestin Jacobs has the option for an extra year of eligibility, but the linebacker group in 2025 will likely look very different from what it does now.

Young players such as Devon Jackson, Jerry Mixon, Brayden Platt, Dylan Williams, and Kamar Mothudi are expected to step up, but this will still be a linebacker corps with many underclassmen. As a result, the team will likely focus on the transfer portal this offseason to bolster the position.

Oregon Ducks’ 2025 Class Outlook

Heading into the Early Signing Period, the Ducks were on track to sign their third consecutive top-10 ranked class, provided that all players who had verbally committed to Oregon followed through. So far, that has been the case. There are still a few potential flip targets that Lanning and his staff are actively pursuing.

If any more commitments are secured, there’s a chance that the Ducks could assemble another top-5 class under Lanning’s leadership.
