Arizona State football team is gearing up for the Big 12 Conference title game against Iowa State on Saturday in Arlington, Texas. With a College Football Playoff spot on the line, Arizona State, ranked 12th in the latest CFP rankings, is facing a high-stakes matchup.
Earlier this week, the team received disappointing news about wide receiver Jordyn Tyson. Initially ruled out for the championship game due to an injury, Tyson has now been declared out for the rest of the season. The update came from Chris Karpman of Sun Devil Source and was confirmed by head coach Kenny Dillingham on Wednesday.
“Jordyn Tyson had surgery yesterday and is out for the season,” Karpman reported. Dillingham added, “We’re looking forward to getting him back next year.”
Tyson, who transferred from Colorado, has been a standout performer for Arizona State this season. Leading the team in receptions, yards, and touchdowns, he recorded 75 catches for 1,101 yards and 10 scores. His contributions included three consecutive 100-yard games, highlighted by a 12-catch, 176-yard, two-touchdown performance against Kansas State on November 16. In the regular-season finale, Tyson posted eight catches for 143 yards and a touchdown, including a 59-yard reception in a dominant 49-7 win over rival Arizona.
With Tyson sidelined, Arizona State faces a challenge in replacing his production. The next top receiver is running back Cam Skattebo, who has 35 receptions for 468 yards and two touchdowns. Tyson’s connection with quarterback Sam Leavitt has been instrumental to the team’s passing game throughout the season.
Despite the setback, Arizona State remains focused on securing a Playoff spot or, at the very least, earning a berth in a significant bowl game. Unfortunately, Tyson’s season has come to an early end as he begins his recovery from surgery.
