Blackhawks fire Coach after worst start in the league.
The Chicago Blackhawks fired head coach Luke Richardson after the team’s disappointing performance this season. Following a four-game losing streak, the Blackhawks’ record dropped to a league-worst 8-16-2, including a 3-9-1 stretch over their last 13 games. General manager Kyle Davidson cited the team’s failure to meet expectations in their rebuilding phase, despite offseason acquisitions like Tyler Bertuzzi, Teuvo Teravainen, Alec Martinez, and Craig Smith, along with the return of Connor Bedard, who won the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year last season.
Key players such as Bertuzzi (5 goals, 5 assists in 26 games) and Teravainen (3 goals, 2 assists in his last 21 games) have struggled, while Martinez has been sidelined by injury. The most important player, 19-year-old Bedard, has shown some progress but faced challenges in scoring, ending a 12-game goal drought on November 27. His production (5 goals, 14 assists) is below last season’s pace.
Richardson, in his third season, had a record of 57-118-15 and struggled to improve the team’s inconsistency in all areas. The Blackhawks’ biggest issue has been offense, as they rank 31st in the league with an average of just 2.42 goals per game. Despite efforts to implement the system, the team has not met expectations.
Ahead of the Winter Classic on December 31, the Blackhawks announced Anders Sorensen, previously the AHL Rockford IceHogs’ head coach, as the interim head coach. Sorensen, with a solid AHL record of 117-89-16-7, has been with the Blackhawks organization since 2013 and will now lead the team through the remainder of the season.
