Oregon Ducks Flip 4-Star IOL From BYU in Stunning Move

The excitement and drama of the Early Signing Period’s opening day had quieted, but Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks weren’t finished yet.

In fact, they were just getting started.

When many expected no further recruiting news until at least Friday, the Ducks surprised everyone by securing a commitment from 4-star offensive lineman Alai Kalaniuvalu, a former Oregon commit who had decommitted last month.

Kalaniuvalu initially pledged to the Ducks over the summer but later switched his commitment to BYU. However, he didn’t sign on Wednesday, leaving the door open for Oregon.

That’s never a good situation when Lanning is feeling motivated.

On Thursday night, Oregon successfully flipped Kalaniuvalu back to the Ducks, where his journey began. Here’s more about Kalaniuvalu and what he brings to the team.

Alai Kalaniuvalu Position Outlook

Kalaniuvalu is a skilled player with impressive size at 6-foot-4 and 300 pounds, but it’s reasonable to expect that he will redshirt as a freshman and aim to make an impact in 2026 and 2027.

Oregon Ducks OL Depth

There may be some gaps to fill on the 2024 offensive line with Marcus Harper and Ajani Cornelius moving on. Oregon is hopeful about retaining Josh Conerly, but he could be eyeing the NFL in 2025—only time will tell.

On the plus side, center Iapani Laloulu and guard Dave Iuli, who missed much of 2024 due to a leg injury, will both be returning. The Ducks also have players like Charlie Pickard, Trent Ferguson, Genorris Wilson, Ty Delgado, and Fox Crader. This could be the deepest the offensive line has been in quite some time.

Oregon Ducks’ 2025 Class Outlook

Heading into the Early Signing Period, the Ducks were on track to sign a third consecutive top-10 ranked class, assuming all players verbally committed to Oregon would officially sign. So far, that has been the case. There are still a few potential flip targets that Lanning and his staff are working to secure. If any more commitments come through, the Ducks could potentially put together another top-5 class under Lanning’s leadership.
