According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, a fierce bidding war is underway involving the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays, with contract offers reportedly approaching the $700 million mark. The Los Angeles Dodgers are also considered among the finalists, though details of their offer remain undisclosed.
Soto is expected to announce his free agency decision by Monday, Dec. 9, coinciding with the start of the MLB winter meetings.
Should Soto’s contract surpass Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million deal with the Dodgers, it would become the largest professional sports contract in history. The deal could also establish new MLB records for both total contract value and average annual salary.
According to David Vassegh, the Dodgers are showing interest in bringing back Teoscar Hernandez, a move that would likely signal the end of their pursuit of Juan Soto. The decision may have been influenced by the team’s recent $182 million investment in Blake Snell.
Re-signing Hernandez could be a smart move for the Dodgers, given his impressive postseason performance, where he recorded three home runs and 12 RBIs while slashing .250/.352/.417. His return would add another key contributor to a roster aiming to remain atop Major League Baseball.
If the Dodgers bow out of the Soto sweepstakes, it could create a clearer path for teams like the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and New York Mets to intensify their bids for the star slugger.
