The Philadelphia Phillies are considering significant changes to their roster this offseason, and All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm is a key trade candidate after his underwhelming performance during the team’s shortened playoff run.
Could Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski trade him to acquire starting pitcher Luis Castillo and potentially more from the Seattle Mariners? Bohm could provide a valuable upgrade at third base for Seattle following a strong 2024 season, where he posted a career-high .779 OPS, with 15 home runs, 44 doubles, 97 RBIs, and 62 runs in 606 plate appearances.
Castillo would greatly strengthen the Phillies’ rotation, likely taking over for Taijuan Walker, who struggled with a 7.10 ERA in 83 2/3 innings during the second year of his four-year, $72 million contract. Since signing a five-year, $108 million extension with the Mariners before 2023, Castillo has posted a 3.48 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 394 strikeouts, and an All-Star selection in 372 1/3 innings.
What might a potential trade between Seattle and Philadelphia look like? Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer proposed the following hypothetical deal:
- Phillies receive: right-handed pitcher Luis Castillo and shortstop Cole Young
- Mariners receive: third baseman Alec Bohm
A Bohm-for-Castillo swap would help Seattle free up valuable financial space to address other needs, and adding Young would sweeten the deal for the Phillies. Young, ranked as Seattle’s second-best prospect by MLB.com, could even take over at third base for Bohm in 2025. He spent 2024 in Double-A, hitting .271/.369/.390 in 552 plate appearances.
